A Dutch Oven is basically a cooking pot with a tight-fitting lid which is originally made from cast iron. For hundreds of years these pots are being used as simple but effective cooking vessels. It's history dates back to the  early 17th century and since then, for over 300 years the term "Dutch oven" has engraved a strong mark especially in outdoor cooking.


Some of the main characteristics of this pot are that it is thick-walled therefore very durable and serves a lifetime which will be usually passed on to future generations. Because of this reason for their owners these pots have a considerable intangible value as well.  


You might be wondering why a Dutch oven is called a Dutch oven? From early European historical records it is known that the first versions of today's Dutch ovens were produced by the Dutch who had a special foundry system with a unique process letting them produce smooth surfaced pots. Due to the high quality of these cookware produced by the Dutch a reputation has arised throughout the years which associated the name Dutch with these cooking vessels and created the "Dutch Oven" name.

 

In conclusion, the durability and versatility of these pots made a very good reputation and as a result these became items that were in high demand not only in the Netherlands but they were also imported mainly to Britain followed by the the rest of Europe and afterwards to America.

And today, Dutch Oven's are continuing their popularity earned since the 17th centruy and have become an indispensable camping item for outdoor cooking for many of the outdoor enthusiasts out there.
